Abstract
Virus herpes simplex je široko rasprostranjeni virus koji uzrokuje bolest samo kod ljudi. Postoje dva tipa HSV: HSV-1 i HSV-2. HSV-1 najčešće uzrokuje oralni, a HSV-2 genitalni herpes, iako sve više slučajeva genitalnog herpesa u svijetu uzrokuje HSV-1. Oba tipa virusa mogu zaraziti velik broj osoba i uzrokovati različite kliničke bolesti i manifestacije. Zbog prilagodbe terapije i praćenja tijeka bolesti klinička dijagnoza mora se potvrditi laboratorijskim testom. Za dijagnozu akutne infekcije koriste se PCR, staniče kulture, mikroskopiranje, i metoda direktne imunofluorescencije, a za dokaz prethodne infekcije serološke metode kojima se dokazuju protutijela prisutna u serumu.
